Breaking the Chains of "I Have No Choice": Reclaiming Your Agency in the New Year

As we stand on the cusp of a new year, the air is often thick with resolutions and the pressure to perform. Life often feels like a constant juggling act, and the engine that fuels our ambitions can easily run too hot. In this state of constant "doing," we can find ourselves feeling burnt out, disconnected, and just going through the motions.

In the midst of this, there is a dangerous phrase that often whispers in our minds, especially when we feel overwhelmed: “I have no choice.”

We say it about our jobs, our packed calendars, or the habits we can’t seem to shake. It feels true in the moment. But I want to offer you a different perspective to carry into this year: "I have no choice" is rarely a fact. It is a perspective that keeps us from living intentionally.

The Cost of Action Without Awareness

When we operate from the belief that we have no choice, we stop leading our lives. We lean too far into action without awareness, chasing the next thing without knowing why. We move simply to avoid stillness.

This is often a symptom of the "doing" taking over completely. We fear that if we pause, we might drop the ball. But meaningful change doesn't begin with doing; it begins with noticing and awareness. It begins by admitting that even when the options are hard, you are the expert of your own life.

Embracing the Paradox

I know what you’re thinking: But I have obligations. I have deadlines.

Here lies the Power of Paradox. The journey of transformation is less about finding black-and-white answers and more about embracing the messy, often contradictory, reality of being human.

The paradox is that acknowledging your constraints is actually what sets you free. When you shift your language from "I have no choice" to "I am choosing this because it serves a value I hold," you move from a place of victimhood to a place of grounded confidence.

  • You aren't "stuck" in a role; you are choosing it to support a specific goal, while you intentionally design your next step.

  • You aren't "forced" into a commitment; you are deciding whether it aligns with your core values or if it's time to close the door on what doesn't align.

A CUSP Framework for Reclaiming Choice

If you feel cornered by the "I have no choice" narrative this January, let’s use the CUSP pathway to reframe this perceived stuckness into a powerful launchpad:

C - Centre: Grounding in Reality

Start by noticing what is truly present. Are you leaning too far into "doing" (action) or "being" (awareness)?

Pinpoint the facts that brought you to this moment. "I have no choice" is a story; "I have three conflicting deadlines" is a fact. Centering allows us to separate the two.

U - Uncover: Releasing the Need for Control

We often feel we have "no choice" because we are trying to control the uncontrollable. We prioritize the Circle of Concern, fretting about people and scenarios that don't honor our values, over the things that matter most.

Uncover where you are giving urgency to the unaligned. Are you saying "I have no choice" because you are seeking external validation? The more you let go of the need to control how others perceive you, the more power you gain.

S - Source: Reconnecting with Your Inner Compass

Move from possibilities to purpose. A coach's role isn't to give you the map, but to help you find the inner compass you already possess.

When you source your actions from your internal truth rather than a plea for external approval, your choices become infused with purpose. You begin to lead with your whole self, ensuring your performance is rooted in genuine purpose.

P - Propel: Designing Your Action Plan

Turn your insight into a clear, methodical action plan.

If you realize you do have a choice, what small step will you take today? Propel forward by designing practical, actionable steps that ensure the changes you make aren't temporary. It’s about creating sustainable habits that support your well-being.

Your Invitation to Experiment

We are all searching for meaning, and time is precious. This year, don't let the narrative of "I have no choice" steal your agency.

The most powerful thing you can do is slow down just long enough to tune in, and then act from that place of clarity. It is hard work to let go of what defined you before, but you must protect your new journey.

So, what logical step could you take to design your next great chapter?

Ready to run your own experiment? Let's find out if we have the right chemistry to work together and turn your insights into action.
