The Power of Paradox: Embracing the Contradictions That Unlock True Growth

Have you ever felt caught between two opposing truths? That quiet hum of restlessness or sense of being stuck often lives in the space of a paradox - a contradiction that holds a deeper truth.
As a coach, I’ve observed that profound growth rarely follows a straight line. Instead, it begins in that space of discomfort, at the cusp where logic and intuition collide. The journey of transformation is less about finding black-and-white answers and more about embracing the messy, often contradictory, reality of being human.
Here are four powerful paradoxes that, once embraced, become the keys to unlocking your next great chapter:
Paradox 1: The More You Let Go of Control, the More Power You Gain
We expend immense energy in a tireless quest to be liked, validated, and approved by everyone around us. This desire to control the outcome - to manage how others perceive us, is a battle we can never truly win, because what others think is beyond our control.
The Problem: We often prioritize the Circle of Concern: fretting about people, scenarios, and tasks that don't truly honour our values or respect our time—over the things that matter most. We give urgency to the unaligned.
The Liberating Truth: The Mel Robbins-inspired "Let Them" theory is revolutionary: Give people the freedom to think negatively about you. When you stop shrinking and stop molding your choices around someone else’s comfort, you gain unshakeable power, because your actions emanate from a deep wellspring of genuine values, not a plea for external approval.
Paradox 2: The Coach Who Knows Nothing Is Your Greatest Expert
If you want to achieve a specific business goal, wouldn't you hire a consultant who has done it before? Yes. But if you want to fundamentally change how you approach that goal, you hire a coach.
The Problem: We often seek advice from "experts" whose answers are based on their past, leading us to run in circles or chase success that doesn't ultimately satisfy us.
The Liberating Truth: The best coach doesn't need to know anything about your industry or subject because you are the expert of your own life. A Co-Active coach's role is not to give you the map, but to be the guide who illuminates the inner compass that you already possess. Through deep listening, intuitive insight, and a co-active collaborative approach, we help you generate your truth, not replicate ours.
Paradox 3: Performance and Wholeheartedness are Mutually Exclusive
In her book, Strong Ground, Brené Brown discusses the necessity of recognizing the "falsehood that performance and wholeheartedness are mutually exclusive." We operate under the belief that to be professional, effective, and accountable, we must shut down our humanity.
The Problem: We show up at work (or even in our relationships) wearing a mask of perfection and stoicism, fearing that vulnerability, our "wholeheartedness", will be perceived as weakness or an impediment to high performance. This drive for "bluster, hubris, and even cruelty" in leadership, as Brown notes, is increasingly common, but it sacrifices connection and resilience.
The Liberating Truth: True, sustainable strength comes from grounded confidence - the kind that allows you to be disciplined, accountable, and fully human. By allowing wholeheartedness into your process, you foster the deep connection, deep thinking, and deep collaboration necessary to navigate the complexities and uncertainties of modern life. When you lead with your whole self, your performance is rooted in genuine purpose.
Paradox 4: Humility Is Your Secret Self-Saboteur
"Don't brag." "Stay humble." These are "good" characteristics ingrained in many of us, but they can secretly sabotage our full potential.
The Problem: A misplaced sense of humility prevents us from owning our strengths and celebrating our wins. We avoid talking about our intelligence or successes, which keeps us from stepping into leadership roles or initiating the bold, sharp purpose we need to pursue.
The Liberating Truth: This isn't about arrogance; it's about Sourcing from your true self. To reach your full potential, you must first acknowledge it. You are called to influence perceptions through your actions - to live with unwavering integrity, but you must do so from a place of authentic alignment, not shrinking. To fully lead or live your values, you must be courageous enough to close the doors on what doesn’t align with your new "core hypothesis".
Navigating Paradox with the CUSP Pathway
These contradictions are not roadblocks; they are pathways to unparalleled freedom. They are the signal that something within you is ready to shift.
You can use the CUSP pathway to reframe this perceived stuckness into a powerful launchpad:
C - Centering (Grounding in Data): We start by noticing what is truly present. What are the observable challenges? Are you leaning too far into action (doing) or awareness (being)? Pinpoint the facts that brought you to this moment.
U - Uncovering (The "What If" Experiment): We explore the paradoxes. What stories are driving the need to be seen a certain way? What habits or commitments are your "Bobs"? The things that detract from your boldest purpose? We make it safe to explore new perspectives.
S - Sourcing (The Core Hypothesis): We move from possibilities to purpose. We reconnect to your core values to define the "core hypothesis" of your life. This clarity becomes your filter for every choice, ensuring your actions are infused with purpose.
P - Propelling (Actionable Steps for Change): We turn the insight into a clear, methodical action plan. You take aligned steps forward from wholeness, not performance. This is where we design your reentry and create the sustainable habits that ensure your changes aren't temporary.
The next chapter of your growth awaits.
